🍎 September just feels like APPLE season! 🍏

I loved learning apple facts in September, and so did my students! How Do Apples Grow? by Betsy Maestro is a wonderful nonfiction read-aloud for turning all that apple excitement into meaningful reading comprehension and informational text learning. 📚

Students learn fascinating facts about apples while exploring fiction vs. nonfiction, facts and details, captions, diagrams and labels, new vocabulary, schema, misconceptions, and more. They also get plenty of opportunities to go back into the text, find information, ask questions, and share their new learning. 🔎🍎

One of my favorite parts is taking a closer look at how an apple tree changes through the seasons. Students can sequence and write about the seasons and then create an Apple Seasons Craft to show what they learned. Add the “Awesome to the Core” letters and you have an adorable September bulletin board! 🍎🌳

There are also vocabulary activities, opinion writing, apple picking writing, and even a survey, tally, and graph activity to extend the learning across your day.

🦉 Whoooo loves learning about OWLS?! 🦉

Owls are always such a fun nonfiction topic for first graders, especially during the fall! Owls by Gail Gibbons is a wonderful informational text for getting students excited about learning while practicing important reading comprehension and nonfiction text skills. 📚

Students become owl experts as they learn fascinating facts while exploring table of contents, headings, facts and supporting details, fact and opinion, fiction vs. nonfiction, captions, diagrams and labels, and new vocabulary. There are also plenty of opportunities for students to dig back into the text to find information and show what they know! 🔎

We extend the learning with writing activities about owls and their life cycle, vocabulary practice, and an adorable owl craft that makes the sweetest “Love Whoooo You Are!” classroom display. 🦉❤️

The Bear Ate Your Sandwich by Julia Sarcone-Roach is such a FUN read-aloud for getting students thinking, laughing, and looking closely at the story! Just when you think you know exactly what happened to that missing sandwich…there’s a little twist that makes this book even better. 😂

This story is perfect for working on sequencing, retelling, problem and solution, character analysis, making inferences, text evidence, point of view, and author’s purpose. I especially love using it for inferencing because students have to use the pictures, story clues, and what they already know to decide what they REALLY think happened. 🔎📚

It’s one of those books your students will want you to read again as soon as you finish!
