Unit 8 of my First Grade MASTER Math Curriculum takes addition and subtraction to the next level by helping students determine whether equations are true or false, balance equations, and identify which sign is missing. Students sort true and false addition and subtraction equations, balance equations, solve missing addend and missing subtrahend task cards, determine whether to add or subtract, and decide what sign is missing. These hands-on activities help students truly understand what it means for an equation to be balanced.
Apply Skills
Students practice with interactive games like Cover All boards and Bingo for missing addends and subtrahends. These activities keep engagement high while reinforcing true and false equations and balanced number sentences.
Small Group Instruction
Targeted small group lessons focus on true or false addition and subtraction equations, missing addends and subtrahends, mixed practice, balancing equations, and determining which operation sign is missing. This is where misconceptions are addressed, and confidence grows.
Technology
Eight digital activities are included in Boom Learning and Google Slides. Students practice true or false equations, balancing equations, missing numbers, and choosing the correct operation sign in an interactive format that works perfectly for centers or online learning.
Enrichment
Ready for more? Enrichment activities extend learning to equations within 20 and beyond. Students work on mixed true and false equations, advanced missing number problems, balancing more complex equations, and determining missing signs in higher level number sentences.
Review & Assessment
The review section strengthens overall number sense with comparing numbers, writing numbers in words, place value with tens and ones, money, fractions of shapes, and solving and comparing addition and subtraction sentences. Assessments, recording sheets, class progress tracking, and individual progress sheets are included to keep you organized.
