Pumpkin Patch Dramatic Play

Who doesn’t love Fall and all the fun things it brings? My little Charlie LOVES autumn, and so do my first graders. I wanted a way to capture the magic of pumpkin season while still sneaking in meaningful literacy and math. The result is my Harvest Market & Pumpkin Patch Dramatic Play set!

Setting Up Your Pumpkin Patch Dramatic Play

No fancy stand? No problem! A bookshelf, counter space, or small table becomes a beautiful harvest market. The printable labels and step-by-step picture directions included make set-up simple. Students can “shop” for flowers, snacks, or pumpkins—just like a real farmers’ market or pumpkin patch. Check out this Amazon list for supplies to fill your pumpkin patch dramatic play center.

Three Interactive Market Sections

This dramatic play experience is divided into three exciting parts, each one full of playful learning.

1. Pumpkin Stand & Weighing Station

Students begin their market adventure by shopping for small, medium, and large pumpkins, field corn, and gourds. At the weighing station, they practice measuring weight and counting money as they purchase their fall treasures.
Skills: counting, comparing sizes, weight measurement, addition/subtraction.

2. Flower Picking & Arranging

Next, children visit the flower stand to pick beautiful fall blooms. They design their own flower arrangements, letting creativity bloom while learning about colors, patterns, and fine-motor coordination.
Skills: patterning, creative design, descriptive writing.

3. Fall Treats Cafe

Finally, students stop by the fall treats station for mini pumpkin or apple pies, donuts, and hot drinks. They order, pay, and make change, practicing real-world money skills in a fun, cozy way.
Skills: money exchange, mental math, sequencing steps (ordering → paying → serving).

Playful Learning Across the Curriculum

This dramatic play kit isn’t only adorable—it’s packed with learning:

Math – Two levels of math games, pumpkin counting, addition, making change, and pumpkin-lifecycle sequencing with real photos.

Writing – Open-ended writing prompts and market-themed extension activities to strengthen handwriting, spelling, and sentence structure.

Science – Two pumpkin life-cycle cut-and-paste projects (with real photos) give students a concrete look at how pumpkins grow.

Crafts & Extras

Two seasonal crafts—pumpkin and fall leaf collages—let kids create art that doubles as bulletin board décor. You can print the full kit or pick and choose your favorite pieces to match your time and space.

Why First Graders Still Need Dramatic Play

Even as readers and mathematicians, first graders learn best through play. Pretending to buy, sell, write signs, weigh pumpkins, and count money builds social skills, math fluency, and creativity. This market is a perfect literacy-rich play center for September, October, or your ABC Countdown to Summer theme days.

Bring autumn magic into your classroom with a dramatic play set that’s equal parts fun and educational. Your students will love it—and so will you! 🍁

“The Fall Harvest Dramatic Play is not only engaging but also provides a meaningful unit where kids can grow as writers, tell stories, describe what they see, and truly interact with the activities. In my opinion, it’s the best dramatic play I’ve ever seen! I love that it works beautifully for early childhood classrooms while also being perfect for older children. Such a versatile and creative resource!”

“I teach in an afterschool classroom with students who started K in the fall up to students in grade 4. They loved this so much. I did not plan on keeping the center this long, but they are not ready to give it up! It has been used every day for over two months. I highly recommend this resource. Tons of options and ideas!”
