After the Fall by Dan Santat is a beautiful story about facing fears, building courage, and trying again. It is the perfect read aloud for the beginning of the school year when you are building classroom community and talking about feelings, perseverance, and growth.

This book companion is packed with differentiated reading comprehension activities, writing extensions, word work, and math games to support your literacy block. Students will explore important strategies like predicting, sequencing, character traits, main idea and details, problem and solution, point of view, and inferencing.

To wrap up the unit, students will love creating the Humpty Dumpty craft and displaying it with the “Get Back Up!” bulletin board letters, making a meaningful back to school display that reinforces perseverance and social emotional learning.

It’s such a fun story to share during those first weeks when you’re talking about classroom rules, respect, behavior, making good choices, and building a classroom community. And let’s face it… Viola Swamp definitely gets their attention! 😂

I love using this story to sneak in lots of learning too! This book companion is filled with differentiated reading comprehension activities, writing, word work, and math games, so you can choose the activities that work best for your students.
