This Otter Nonfiction Unit helps students learn al This Otter Nonfiction Unit helps students learn all about sea otters and river otters while practicing important informational reading skills. Students read a 12-page mini reader filled with nonfiction text features like a table of contents, headings, captions, glossary, and bold vocabulary words. There is also a matching colorful digital book with real photographs that you can project with Google Slides, download as PowerPoint, or share as a PDF. After reading, students dive into text feature hunts, digging for details, schema building, fact and detail practice, clarifying meaning, text connections, and compare/contrast activities. There are also word work pages, writing extensions, vocabulary posters with real photos, and a full Otter Research Report where students explore habitat, food, predators, adaptations, and fun facts. Do you study animal groups in your classroom? 🐾 W Do you study animal groups in your classroom? 🐾 We used to spend one full week on each animal group starting in April, and my Mammal Unit just received a major glow up! I added a full color real photo book and so many new activities to make it even more engaging and meaningful. Here is how I love to teach it. On Monday, we read the nonfiction mini reader and begin a KWL or Schema chart while working on comprehension and writing. Tuesday through Thursday, we dive into other picture books about mammals. By midweek, my students are basically mammal experts! I introduce the five research choices and let them pick the mammal that interests them most. Friday becomes research day.
