That’s exactly what makes Spookley so special! ❤️ Spookley the Square Pumpkin is such a sweet Halloween read-aloud for teaching students that being different can be something wonderful. It’s one of my favorite stories to pair with pumpkins because there are SO many reading, writing, math, and SEL connections you can make! There are also plenty of writing, vocabulary, and word work activities. Students can describe Spookley, design and describe their own uniquely shaped pumpkin, retell the story, share their opinion, practice rhyming, syllables, ABC order, making words, and more. ✏️📚 And because SHAPES play such an important part in this story, I’ve included lots of 2D shape math fun, too! Students can complete shape sorts and puzzles, play shape games, survey and graph, and more. 🔺🟧🔵 Of course, my favorite part might be the Spookley Shape Craft! Students can choose from 10 different options to create their own unique pumpkin. 🕷️ October and November are the PERFECT time to ge 🕷️ October and November are the PERFECT time to get a little creepy and crawly with your nonfiction learning! 🕸️ My students always LOVE learning about spiders, and National Geographic Kids: Spiders by Laura Marsh is such an engaging nonfiction text for building reading comprehension and informational text skills. During our spider study, students become little researchers as they learn fascinating spider facts, build new vocabulary, explore captions, diagrams, labels, headings, and table of contents, and practice identifying a fact and the details that support it. 🔎📚 There are plenty of opportunities to read, write, make connections, compare fact and opinion, and show what they’ve learned. And of course, we have to add a little FUN with an adorable Spider Headband Craft! 🕷️ This unit is part of my Spiders Fact & Details Week AND my Year-Long Reading Comprehension with a Purpose Bundle, so you can easily turn your students’ fascination with spiders into meaningful literacy learning.
